Law, Psychiatry, and Public Policy Resource Site

This site is maintained by Creighton J. Hite.  I am a doctoral candidate in Clinical/Forensic Psychology at the American School of Professional Psychology, Virginia campus (ASPP).  I am currently working on my dissertation which is titled: Empirically validated treatments for sex offenders: mission impossible?  I will be an intern at the Virginia Treatment Center for Children, Medical College of Virginia during the 2001-2002 academic year.

I graduated from Hampden-Sydney College with a BA in Psychology and Sociology.  With college only two months behind me, I began working as a behavioral counselor in a hospital for children and adolescents who displayed severe emotional and behavioral difficulties.  Since then, I have worked in a variety of psychiatric hospitals and special education schools.  Two years after college, I decided to go to graduate school.  After receiving a M.Ed. from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Special Education/Emotional Disturbance, I worked as a special education teacher with adolescents who were emotionally disturbed or learning disabled.  Although I enjoyed being a teacher, my goal was to become a clinical psychologist.  Thus, I applied to graduate school a second time.

During my first year as a doctoral student, I worked part-time in an inpatient psychiatric hospital for children, adolescents, and adults.  During the past two years, I have worked as the coordinator of the Institute for African-American Mental Health Training and Research in VCU's Psychology Department.  As a Caucasian, I have been able to gain knowledge about the lives and cultures of people different from me, as well as learn the basic skill areas necessary for effective cross-cultural service delivery.  I also completed two clinical practica.  My first practicum experience was in a maximum security forensic unit at Central State Hospital.  The second practicum experience was at the Virginia Treatment Center for Children, Medical College of Virginia.  This year, I have been volunteering at the Medical College of Virginia's Forensic Evaluation Program doing Competency to Stand Trial Evaluations at the Richmond City Jail.

I am a Certified Forensic Evaluator for the Commonwealth of Virginia, as well as a licensed teacher with an endorsement in emotional disturbance, grades K-12.  I am a member of the American Psychological Association's Division 41(American Psychology-Law Society), the Forensic and Personality Assessment Club at ASPP, Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society, and Sigma Nu Fraternity.  Furthermore, I have attended numerous conferences, seminars, and trainings in the field of clinical/forensic psychology and I hope to continue to gain experience and develop a repertoire of intervention and assessment strategies with the forensic population.
